Magnifying sound by electromagnetic movement

This project is part of the four-day International Synth Design Hackathon 2022, organized by Synthux Academy

Magnified is a project about our changing habitats. What are the habitats we surround ourselves with? What do they look like? And how do they change? With magnified you influence your habitat by symmetrically moving magnets to create a levitating effect. The user gains control over the atmosphere around them while focusing on this magnetic play. The small movement of the middle magnet is magnified by the sounds changing your current habitat.

How does it work?
The synthesizer uses electromagnetic conductivity. A moving magnet near copper generates a small electric field, which allows it to levitate. Moving the magnets allows the middle magnet to levitate. Levitation requires constant interaction with the object. On the bottom of the synthesizer, between the copper plates are located three light-dependent resistors (LDRs). The LDRs control two oscillators with different pitches and a filter. When the magnet moves, its shadow will pass over the different LDRs, which will modulate the oscillator's pitches and the filter’s cutoff frequency
